Candle Fire Facts
Candles bring the perfect holiday scent to any home and make great gifts to give to any person. Although they bring great joy to people everywhere during the holiday season, it is important to note how to properly and safely use candles. According to the NFPA (National Fire Prevention Association) "Candle fires peak in December and January with 11 percent of house fires in each of these months."
SERVPRO of Anderson is 'Faster to Any Disaster' and trained to handle any size fire remediation job, but the first step you can take is to take proper precaution when using candles. Here are some tips from the NFPA.
- Use candle holders that are sturdy, and won’t tip over easily.
- Put candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface.
- Light candles carefully. Keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame.
- Don’t burn a candle all the way down — put it out before it gets too close to the holder or container.
- Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.
- Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready to use during a power outage. Never use candles.
While all of these tips can help prevent a house fire this holiday season, we understand that disaster can strike at anytime. Call the professionals at SERVPRO of Anderson at (864)-224-0285 for services 24/7.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there are around 2,300 residential fires each year on Thanksgiving. This rounds up to around 26 million in property losses. Cooking was by far the lead cause, with 73.5 percent of these fires. There are a few safety tips that you can use to help prevent a fire loss Thanksgiving 2022. Fire Remediation PPE 2022
8/6/2022 (Permalink)
Fire Remediation PPE, Just Add Gloves
According to OSHA, “Personal protective equipment is worn to minimize exposure to a variety of hazards. Examples of PPE include such items as gloves, foot and eye protection, protective hearing devices (earplugs, muffs) hard hats, respirators and full body suit.
We take the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) very seriously. On every job that our production crew goes on, there is some use of PPE, even if it is just a mask.
On any fire remediation job, there can be many hazardous materials affected by the fire, such as asbestos, lead, household chemicals, and mold. These materials, on top of the smoke and soot, require additional personal protective equipment to prevent the inhalation and physical contact with any of these harmful substances.
Personal protective equipment that may be required on a fire remediation job, depending on the extent of the damages, could include:
- Respirator/ Face Mask
- Eye Protection
- Foot protection
- Gloves
- Headwear

From the entire staff at SERVPRO of Anderson, we want to wish everyone a very Happy and Safe Fourth of July. Although Firework safety is very important during this holiday weekend (check out our blog on Firework Safety Tips), we want to make sure our local community has some safety tips for grilling out this Fourth of July weekend.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, Grill fires have their peak in the month of July. The holidays and warm days lead to more cookouts, and more serious injuries. Here are some tips about how to use grills safely to avoid disaster and injury.
All Grills
- Use propane or charcoal grills outdoors only. Place grills away from the home or deck railings and out from under eaves or overhanging branches.
- Keep kids and pets at least 3 ft. away from grilling areas and never leave the grill unattended.
- Keep grills clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grill and tray below. Always make sure the gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
Propane Grills
- Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it.
- If you smell gas while cooking, immediately move away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not attempt to move the grill.
- If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 5 minutes before re-lighting.
Charcoal Grills
- If using starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid.
- If using electric charcoal starter, make sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
- Keep charcoal fluid out of reach of children and away from heat sources. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.

What is Fire Remediation?
4/15/2022 (Permalink)
Remediation is defined as the act of remedying or correcting something that has been corrupted or that is deficient. Fire damage remediation is the act of cleaning and restoring property and personal belongings that have sustained smoke or fire damage. Our goal at SERVPRO of Anderson is to salvage belongings and restore the property to be inhabited again.
During the process there are multiple steps that our production team takes to get the property back to livable condition. First, we make a plan of action, then we make sure the structure is secure and save. Next, our team provides any water extraction needed. Demolition and debris removal is the next step, before our team can provide smoke and soot removal and mitigation. After the area is clean, repairs and restoration can begin.
If you suffer a fire to your home or business, this is the process that you can expect out of SERVPRO of Anderson. We are available 24/7 if disaster should strike. Give us a call at (864)-224-0285 for our Fire Remediation services.
Why You Should Use High Gloss Paint
3/24/2022 (Permalink)
At SERVPRO of Anderson, our production crew have cleaned every type of surface and material imaginable. High-gloss paint is one of the easiest surface for us to clean. It is great for cleaning off smelly smoke residues and is resistant to absorbing moisture.
According to Laguna Painting, "High gloss paints are typically solid, light-reflective, and ultra-shiny. They are the simplest to clean and most durable paint sheen of them all. They are as tough as the paint that you see on appliances."
It is the best paint you can use for kitchens in your home or business that are most likely to endure smoke damages.
Even when the correct steps are taken to help prevent disaster, smoke or soot damage is not always preventable. If disaster should strike, call us at SERVPRO of Anderson at (864)-224-0285 for our Fire Remediation services.
Pendleton, SC Fire Remediation

Charred vapor barrier in crawlspace
This home in Pendleton, SC suffered very minimal damages from a small fire, affecting the crawlspace. The customer was not positive at the time of our scope what caused the fire, but had suspicions that it was electrical. Our production crew provided the scope to get a jump start on the estimate while the homeowner had an electrician out to find and fix the cause of loss. Once the wiring was replaced, one of our production members provided another thorough scope of work before we began services. The vapor barrier in the crawlspace and some piping in the ground were charred from the fire. We assessed that the vapor barrier would need replacement and air scrubbers should be set through the duration of HEPA vacuuming and sponging the smoke and soot. Our entire SERVPRO of Anderson crew, from project manager to office staff, worked tirelessly to inform the customer step by step of the process. We understand that a fire loss can be very unnerving and it is our goal to give our customers comfort during the restoration process.

Key Fire Safety Tips
10/8/2021 (Permalink)
As 2021's fire prevention week comes to an end, SERVPRO of Anderson wants to remind you of a few fire safety tips!
- Watch your cooking
Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove. - Give space heaters space
Keep fixed and portable space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn. Turn off heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep. - Smoke outside
Ask smokers to smoke outside. Have sturdy, deep ashtrays for smokers. - Keep matches and lighters out of reach
Keep matches and lighters up high, out of the reach of children, preferably in a cabinet with a child lock. - Inspect electrical cords
Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs, or have loose connections. - Be careful using candles
Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn. Blow out candles when you leave the room or go to sleep. - Have a home fire escape plan
Make a home fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year. - Install smoke alarms
Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Interconnect smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound. - Test smoke alarms
Test smoke alarms at least once a month and replace batteries once a year or when the alarm “chirps” to tell you the battery is low. Replace any smoke alarm that is more than 10 years old. - Install sprinklers
If you are building or remodeling your home, install residential fire sprinklers. Sprinklers can contain and may even extinguish a fire in less time than it would take the fire department to arrive.

2021 Fire Prevention Week
9/28/2021 (Permalink)
The 2021 Fire Prevention week is October 3rd-9th and this year's FPW's campaign is "Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety". The objective this year is to teach about all the sounds a fire alarm or carbon monoxide monitor might make. According to the National Fire prevention Association, "there are smoke alarms and alert devices that alert people who are deaf or hard of hearing. These devices include strobe lights that flash to alert people when the smoke alarm sounds. Pillow or bed shakers designed to work with your smoke alarm also can be purchased and installed."
Smoke Alarms
- A continued set of three loud beeps means smoke or fire.
- A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and needs to be changed.
- All smoke alarms must be changed after 10 years.
- Chirping that continues after the battery is changed means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit needs to be replaced.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms
- A continuous set of four loud beeps means carbon monoxide is present in your home.
- A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery needs to be changed.
- CO alarms also have "end of life" sounds that vary by manufacturer. This means it is time to replace the alarm.
- Chirping that continues after the battery is changed means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit needs to be replaced.
"Hear a Beep, Get on your feet." and "Hear a chirp, Make a change" are some good slogans to remember!
For more information about this year's fire week campaign, check out NFPA.org/Fire Prevention Week.
SERVPRO of Anderson has a few more tips that can be referred to in our blog "When to change your smoke alarm batteries".

Fire Remediation- Board Up Jobs
7/13/2021 (Permalink)
Often times, one of the first steps that our production team takes in a fire remediation job is to board up the building, residential or commercial. This is an important first step because it keeps the structure in the best post-loss condition, allowing for a smooth remediation without further damages. Things like weather and wildlife can cause further damages to a fire torn building, resulting in more time and money spent on a job. Potential Causes for Holiday Fires
12/2/2020 (Permalink)
Fires around the holidays are very common. SERVPRO of Anderson hopes everyone has had a fire free holiday season. Here are the main causes of holiday/winter fires:
Fireplaces
During the winter and holiday season people use their fireplaces more. Be sure to clean out your fireplace and watch the fire until it is completely burned out.
Cooking
Throughout the holiday season people tend to cook more. Many people will start cooking and leave their food unattended. If you are cooking in the oven, do not forget to turn it off!!
Decorative Lights
Make sure the lights you choose to decorate with do not have frayed wires. This could easily start an electrical fire. We recommend you do not leave lights up year-round, as the chances of that strand catching fire increases.
Candles
People also tend to light more candles during the winter and holiday season. According to the National Fire Protection Association, four of the five most dangerous days of the year for residential candle fires are Christmas, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day, and New Year’s Eve. If you light a candle, make sure it is away from anything that could blow on it and catch fire. Also make sure it is on a sturdy surface and you don't forget to blow it out.
Christmas Trees
It is very common for a Christmas tree to catch fire if it is not treated properly. Make sure you water your Christmas tree if it is real in order to reduce the chance of it catching fire.
If you happen to experience a fire don't forget you can call SERVPRO of Anderson at (864)-224-0285!!

Fire Damage: Smoke and Soot
6/25/2020 (Permalink)
If you've experienced a home or building fire, then you know how smoke and soot can damage your property.
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Anderson will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
